Published on Dec. 20, 2024

Congratulations to Dr. El-Sheikh Ali for receiving the 2024 Equine Research Award – Boehringer Ingelheim during the 70th Annual Convention of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) in Orlando, Florida, December 7-11, 2024.

At the Gluck Center, Dr. El-Sheikh Ali’s research program utilizes cutting-edge omics technologies alongside classical molecular techniques to advance our understanding of equine placental physiology and pathology. His work addresses critical issues in the equine industry, particularly equine placentitis (both ascending and nocardioform types). His research has provided valuable insights into the hormonal changes and molecular mechanisms associated with equine placentitis, which could lead to more effective therapies and diagnostic tools to prevent placentitis-induced preterm labor. Currently, Dr. El-Sheikh Ali is using proteomics to identify potential serum biomarkers for equine placentitis. This translational research aims to provide veterinarians with improved diagnostic tools and treatment methods, ultimately leading to better pregnancy outcomes for mares and healthier foals.
