DNA Testing

DNA Testing

We use a panel of 17 microsatellite markers and two sex chromosome markers to generate a DNA profile for each horse that is submitted. DNA can be extracted from hair, blood or any tissue. This profile is used to confirm that the horse qualifies as the offspring of a given stallion and mare, which many breed registries require prior to issuing registration papers.

This type of DNA testing CANNOT be used to identify the breed of horse. It CAN be used to match an unknown horse to a DNA profile in our database in cases where a horse has been transferred without papers and its identity is uncertain, as long as the horse was DNA-profiled previously through our laboratory.
